I purchased electronics that turned out defective, but the store refuses a refund. What legal steps can I take?

Hello everyone,

I recently bought an electronic device from a retail store in Dubai, and unfortunately, it turned out to be defective within a few days of use. When I returned to the store to request a refund or replacement, they refused, claiming that once the item is sold, they are not responsible.

From what I understand, UAE consumer protection laws guarantee certain rights for buyers, including the right to return or replace faulty goods. I’ve heard that the Ministry of Economy and the Dubai Department of Economic Development (DED) handle consumer complaints, but I’m not sure about the exact process or how strong my case would be.

My questions are:

  • What specific rights do I have under UAE consumer protection laws when a product is defective?

  • Is the store legally obliged to offer a refund, replacement, or repair?

  • How do I file a complaint with the Consumer Protection Department or DED?

  • Has anyone here had experience successfully resolving such disputes in Dubai?

Any guidance or shared experiences would be greatly appreciated.
